British Values

Gorefield - Our Community

We work closely with the Gorefield Village Group.  They work with us on our Annual remembrance event and other projects to include the annual Gorefield Show.

The Department for Education require schools ‘to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” The British values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:

Democracy: Each year the children decide discuss their rights and responsibilities within their class settings. We have a school council.

The Rule of Law: We use the language of choice of consequence to teach the value and reasons behind laws.

Liberty: We encourage pupils to take ownership of not only their learning and their school place great store on listening carefully to their concerns and ensuring their voices our heard. This supports the caring ethos that is demonstrated on a daily basis by our children. Our pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are taught how to exercise these safely, such as in our e-safety and PSHE lessons.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance: We promote the children’s right to respectfully express views and beliefs and teach them to understand that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect. Gorefield is not culturally diverse; so we promoting diversity through:

  • Assemblies directly and stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures.
  • RE and explicit Diversity PSHE teaching.
  • Sharing their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school.
  • Challenging those who express opinions contrary to these values.
